Methodology
How Qibla Portal calculates the information it shows, and where it is uncertain.
Prayer times
Prayer times are calculated for your coordinates using a public prayer-time calculation service, defaulting to the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method for Pakistan, with an optional Hanafi Asr setting. The calculation method used is always shown alongside the times. Calculated timings may differ from your local mosque or government authority.
Hijri date
The Hijri date shown is calculated, not based on local moon sighting. Calculated Hijri dates can be a day or so ahead of or behind moon-sighting-based dates observed by local authorities.
Moon-sighting uncertainty
Dates for events such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha depend on moon sighting. Qibla Portal marks these as Expected until an official announcement is available, and never presents an expected date as a guaranteed religious ruling. For Pakistan, the relevant official announcement is the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Qibla direction
The Qibla direction is calculated geographically: the initial great-circle bearing from your coordinates to the Kaaba in Makkah, using true geographic north (not magnetic north). It does not require a compass, gyroscope or any device sensor.
Map source
The Qibla map uses Leaflet with OpenStreetMap-compatible map tiles, with attribution shown on the map. The tile provider is kept configurable in case a different provider is needed as usage grows.
Location privacy
Location is requested from your browser only when needed and is not stored in a database. You can always choose a city manually instead of sharing your location.
