The Patience of Prophet Ayyub (Job)
July 15, 2026 · By Qibla Portal Editorial
Prophet Ayyub (peace be upon him) is remembered in the Quran chiefly for one quality: patience through prolonged and severe hardship, without ever losing trust in God.
A Long Trial
Traditional accounts describe Ayyub as a man blessed with wealth, family and health, who lost much of it over time — illness, loss and hardship compounded over many years. Through it, the Quran records only his quiet turning to God, not complaint against Him.
"And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the most merciful of the merciful.'" (Quran 21:83)
Relief After Patience
His prayer was answered, and his hardship was lifted.
"So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity, and We gave him his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers." (Quran 21:84)
Why This Story Endures
Ayyub's account is not held up as an explanation for why hardship occurs, but as a model for how to endure it: with patience (sabr) directed toward God rather than despair. The phrase "the patience of Job" has entered common usage across cultures and faiths for exactly this reason.
A Note on This Account
This is a brief summary, not a substitute for the Quranic verses themselves or established tafsir. Readers seeking a fuller account should consult Surah al-Anbiya (21:83-84) and Surah Sad (38:41-44) directly, along with their commentaries.
